It is our custom to get up early to say Selichos beginning Rosh Chodesh Elul and continuing through Yom Kippur. The Ashkenaz custom is to blow the shofar after Shacharis beginning Rosh Chodesh Elul and continuing until Erev Rosh Hashanah. We begin saying Selichos on the Sunday before Rosh Hashanah. If Rosh Hashanah falls on a Monday or Tuesday, we begin on the Sunday before that.
